An interesting question that's always asked about PC Gaming is of course...

Why should we be doing it?

It's not a stupid question actually, there are quite a few reasons that PC Gaming is worst than console gaming, most importantly in these following aspects

  • Higher Startup Costs
    • An average gaming PC that delivers acceptable 1080P gaming performance can already costs about double of what a console costs
    • The problem is that everyone having their own notion of what acceptable is doesn't help!
  • Need to be technically adept
    • While it's gotten a lot easier in recent years PC gaming is still not a matter of double clicking on a game and running it
      • You still need to have some technical ability
      • Like how to even download and setup your store software like Steam, Epic Games.
      • Dealing with drivers
      • Tweaking settings in games due to bugs, hardware incompatibilities

But there's one extremely good reason to go with PC Gaming, because after the initial high startup costs.

You can almost always eventually get a better deal on PC Games than Console games.

And of course the place to get PC games is Steam!!

While you cannot get physical games on PC anymore, and therefore there's no such thing as a used games market for the PC platform. But due to the amount of purchase options available game prices are very competitive, especially here in Malaysia.

For reference purposes let's first establish Malaysia Big Mac value as of time of writing (Jul 2025) : 1 Big Mac = RM12.97

As the first example, the release price Of Wu Chang fallen feathers in both the Playstation Store and Steam.

Playstation Malaysia Store Steam Malaysia Store
RM 219 / 16.89 Big Macs RM 149 / 11.49 Big Macs

Here we can see that at release the price of a game can vary quite significantly between the console and PC stores.

But of course, not all games will have such a big difference in price during release. Especially for games by big publishers like Capcom, Bandai Namco and so on.

But then on the PC side of things, there are frequent chances for games to go on discount, especially during the great Steam Sales so there are more opportunities to get games at a lower price if you wait.

And besides Steam there are quite a few other places to get games for cheap

  • Humble Bundle
    • One of the first to start the whole Let's buy a bunch of stuff in a bundle at an extremely cheap price and benefit charity at the same time! This site is one of the reasons why I have waaaaaaayyy too many unplayed games in my Steam Library!
    • With bundles, you might not get a bundle with the game you want all the time, but it's a great place to keep an eye on for anything interesting.
  • Epic Games Store
    • Basically Steam's rival in the PC games market.
    • Sometimes there are games that release exclusively on Epic Games Store.
    • But the most important reason to use the Epic Games Store is the fact they give out AT LEAST one free game EVER WEEK, and sometimes these are major AAA titles so it's definitely something!

And of course there's the great big elephant in the room for PC gaming right now...

Xbox PC Game Pass

What is Game Pass? It's a subscription service by Microsoft Xbox where by paying a monthly subscription fee gives you access to a library of games. What's in this library of games?

  • Almosts everything owned by Microsoft Games Publishing
    • This of course includes everything by Activision, Bethesda, etc. etc.
      • We're talking Call Of Duty, Doom, Forza, etc. etc
  • A ton of games from other publishers.
    • Sometimes major games are just launched into game pass on launch day
      • Like Clair Obscur Expedition 33, Wu Chang Fallen Feathers, Lies Of P.

What is the price for all this? RM20 = 1.54 Big Macs Per Month

Game pass is at time of writing the best deal for PC gaming if you're an avid gamer that really just want to have some variety in gaming at a minimum budget. There's a lot of discussion in the industry on wheter or not Game Pass is good or bad for the industry but well.. as gamers we better just enjoy it while it lasts!

And that's a quick summary of why I choose the PC as my primary gaming platform!
